Meet Valerie Madison

As we celebrate ten years of Valerie Madison Fine Jewelry, we sat down with our founder to talk about her journey, her inspirations, and what the next decade looks like for VMFJ.

Every piece at Valerie Madison Fine Jewelry tells a story — one of craftsmanship, heritage, and timeless design. But behind the brand is a person whose path to fine jewelry was anything but conventional. Here, in her own words, is that story.

On beginnings

"What inspired you to start Valerie Madison Fine Jewelry?"

My path to jewelry wasn't exactly traditional. I actually studied Environmental Science and Resource Management at the University of Washington. I've always been drawn to nature, science, and discovery — rocks and dinosaurs were (and still are!) a fun childhood obsession. But somewhere along the way, I realized that my love for the natural world also extended to the beauty of gemstones and metalwork.

Jewelry started as a creative outlet — something I did with my hands when I needed a break from studying and, later, from my job in insurance underwriting. But once I started selling pieces and hearing how much they meant to people, it sparked something in me. I didn't grow up around entrepreneurs. I was the first in my family to go to college, let alone start a business. But I've always been someone who follows my curiosity, and that's what led me here.

On aesthetic

"How would you describe the VMFJ aesthetic?"

Refined, timeless, and personal. I love designs that feel both modern and classic — pieces that don't just follow trends but can be worn and loved for a lifetime. I also have a deep appreciation for alternative engagement rings, especially with unique sapphire gemstones. There's something special about helping someone find a ring that truly represents their love story.

On what sets VMFJ apart

"What makes Valerie Madison different from other fine jewelry brands?"

We're small but mighty. I think what sets us apart is the deep intention behind everything we do. Our team is diverse, which is still rare in the fine jewelry space, and we take a thoughtful, welcoming approach to our customers. Fine jewelry can feel intimidating, but I want people to walk into our store and feel at ease — whether they're buying an engagement ring or just treating themselves to something special.

We also focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing, which ties back to my environmental science background. I care about where our materials come from and how they impact the world, and I try to make responsible choices wherever possible.

On favorite designs

"Do you have a favorite piece you've designed?"

That's like asking me to pick a favorite child! But right now, I'd have to say the Mariposa Pendant. It was inspired by my own heritage — my mother was born in Mexico near the monarch butterfly migration route, and for me, the butterfly represents resilience, transformation, and connection to my ancestors.

I've been on my own journey of reconnecting with my heritage, even learning Spanish so I can better communicate with family members I didn't grow up knowing. Seeing how this pendant has resonated with others has been incredibly meaningful.

On daily life

"What does a typical day look like for you?"

No two days are ever the same, which is both exciting and exhausting. Some days I'm designing new pieces, other days I'm deep in spreadsheets, managing operations, or working on marketing. Running a small business means wearing a million different hats — overwhelming at times, but it keeps things interesting.

Outside of work, I try to make time for things that bring me joy — painting, reading, or just taking my dog Twyla for a walk. I also have a love/hate relationship with Seattle. On a beautiful 75-degree day in July with a frosé in hand, I can't imagine living anywhere else. Ask me in February after weeks of gray drizzle, and I will definitely have a different answer.

On lessons learned

"What's one of the biggest lessons you've learned as a business owner?"

That there's no roadmap. I didn't grow up seeing anyone run their own business, so I had to figure everything out as I went. There have been incredible highs and really tough lows — times when I wasn't sure if I could keep going. But I've learned to trust myself, to surround myself with great people, and to take things one step at a time.

Also: perfection is overrated. Sometimes you just have to put something out into the world before you feel fully ready. That will always be easier said than done, but it's still true.

On what's next

"What's next for VMFJ?"

So many exciting things. I'm always working on new designs, and we're expanding some of our ceremony offerings. I also want to keep finding ways to connect with our community — through in-store events, collaborations, and storytelling. This brand has grown so much in the past ten years, and I can't wait to see where the next decade takes us.
